We have needed a new roof for some time. But we all know the costs^^^^^. So, when a man came by awhile back to pitch his company's story, I simply said we couldn't afford it. He said we had storm damage and it really needed to be replaced. I already knew that but there was no way we could come up with $15,000 or more to do it. He said he could do it and it would not be that expensive. So, I listened.

He explained everything and I told him that if they could do it that cheaply, go ahead. We went through our insurance company, Liberty Mutual and I was very pleased as to how they handled it. Liberty Mutual really came through.

On Thursday, April 18, 2024, the new roofing arrived and they first was going to put it on the roof. However, as they stacked the bundles, the roof proved too steep and they began to slide. The two men were worried that the bundles would slide off so they were put on the ground next to the house.

The guy had a stack of pallets on the truck and I joked about him leaving them here. He said if I wanted them he would leave them. I was very pleased at that. I had been wanting pallets for a few jobs around the property and everytime I try to get some, they either won't part with them or they want $10 to $12 apiece. So I got around 15 pallets free. Cool!

On April 20, 2024 the work crew arrived to get started. There were five guys and they were all young, I figure in their 20s. Watching them I thought back to my 20s and how I too could climb all over a roof back then. I'm 72 now and I can't even climb the ladder anymore.

The work crew was great. All good guys. I talked to a few of them and they were all good fellows. And hard workers. As soon as they got here they got to work. Every so often I would go out and walk around the yard and get some pictures and videos. I never saw any of them taking a break even though, they would have been welcomed to.

I remember many moons ago how it was to do roofing jobs. I even did a couple myself. Back then in the olden days we had to carry the shingle bundles up on our shoulders on the ladder. Today there are machines for that.

Back then there was no air nail guns. we swung a hammer for each and every nail. But with the newer equipment, the job takes a fraction of the time that it once did.

It was a very windy day with the wind blowing around 30 mph. I watched a few times that the workers would get caught in the wind up there and loose their footing. I held my breath but they recovered fine and went on working.

The whole job took about 2-1/2 hours including cleanup. Years ago, a roofing job on our type of roof would be around two days, at least. By 10:00 am, the guys were gone and I was taking pictures of a finished roof.

I'm simply someone who had them install a new roof on our home and I wanted to blog about it and let everyone know of our experience with this company.

So, with that said, here's the layout...there's no surprise charges. What they tell you is the cost is the cost! You don't sign a bunch of papers that you don't understand. Their paperwork and contract is simple and to the point and there's no hidden agenda involved. It's a very simple process that you can feel good about.

We have had so many salesmen come by to want to sell us products and services over the years. I was sick of the whole process. So when the rep stopped by from Homegrown, I figured it was just another crapshoot. We knew the roof was bad and had gotten damaged in the storm. But we are not the type to simply file claims with our insurance company for all kinds of things. Insurance should be used only WHEN you need it. We needed it this time. It was simply trying to find a company to fix the roof that we could actually trust. And we found one...or actually, they found us!

And one more thing...after they finished, while they were still on the roof, they used a blower to clean the new roof and even blew out our spouting. So we got our spoutings cleaned on top of everything else.

On Thursday, the truck arrived with the shingles.

The truck was backed into the driveway and they actually missed running over my driveway lights. (I've had delivery trucks hit them before).

The driver actually got the truck in good and straight. He must have done this before.

It was a cloudy day. The truck's boom was extended.

They were careful swinging the boom around our trees.

At first, they planned to set the shingle pallets up onto the roof of the house.

I asked the driver if he could please drop the pallet of shingles onto our car. He declined. We really need a new car.

Oh it would have made such a nice dent in the car. But, whatever!

They got the shingles up there.

After getting several bundles of shingles in place, the man on the roof decided they were unsafe and they were brought down and put by the house on the ground.

The shingles were delivered by ABC Supply Co.

After the shingles were done, The driver gave me a stack of pallets. I can really use those.

So the shingles will set on the ground for the next two days. I feel better with them there than on the roof.

They got the boom back in place on the truck and were gone.

On their way out of the driveway, again they managed to miss hitting my driveway lights and even the mailbox. Why do so many have a problem with that when this guy could miss them all?

All that was left were the tire prints.

Saturday, April 20, 2024 ~

The day begins...

This was a day that I both looked forward to and a day I dreaded. While I was excited to be getting a new roof on the house, I worried about people being up there. The roof is steep and I hate having workers on it. But when one of the guys told me they would only be on the roof for two hours or less, I felt better. But 2-hours or less? To install a roof?

7:30 am

The crew arrived promptly at 7:30 am.

Within 3 or 4 minutes, they were all set up and ready to go.

This would be the last I would have to look at the "old" roof.

7:45 am

They got to work right away laying the vapor barrier.

All five workers arrived in one vehicle. So there was no waiting for others to get there and no cars or trucks parked all over the street.

The day began cloudy and gloomy. The high winds didn't help matters any either.

The guys paid no mind to the weather or the wind.

The star of the show had to be the trailer. They used it for trash and tools and it actually raised so they could use it to get the shingle bundles to the roof. That was cool!

The trailer is motorized so it moves on it's own with no need for it to be hitched to anything.

The shingle bundles were stacked on top of the trailer.

They got the trailer positioned close to the house and raised it up.

They raised the trailer right outside of the breakfast room window and our cat couldn't believe it. He was freaking out.

8:00 am

By 8:00, the shingles was started.

A cooler and street shoes were left by the truck.

8:30 am

While the others worked on the roof, one of them took the trailer around to the front of the house and started on the small roof over the bay window.

Our dog watched them raise the trailer through the bay window and wondered what that was all about.

The guy finished up the bay window to the relief of our dog.

8:50 am

The bay window is done.

The sun was finally coming out.

The finishing touch was putting on the new ridge vent.

9:20 am

After finishing up and cleaning the yard, I asked the guys to pose for a picture. They consented. They were a great crew. Worked hard and fast and did a fine job.

By 9:30 am they were leaving.

So, now we have a new roof. And it really wasn't like pulling teeth as I thought it might be. It went along very smoothly.

They did a good job matching the shingle color also.

Summery ~

All i can say is my wife and I are very pleased with the roof and the crew did a really nice job. The cat and dog weren't too happy with the noise and everyone walking around, but they'll get over it.

The workers were very professional and worked right through the weather conditions. In the time it took you to read this blog and look over all of the pictures, we had a new roof installed. I was also impressed with how they even went around to my neighbor's yards to make sure no trash had blow over there.

Like I stated before, I posted this blog simply to highlight their work and to let the residents of the area know that there actually IS a company out there that will treat you right. From the price to the workmanship, it was all good.

So, if your looking to have a new roof put onto your house, garage, shed, etc., or if you need new gutters, at least call Homegrown and check them out for yourself. They give free estimates and the only surprise you'll get is a nice job done for a change. I've added their link at the end.
